Grottke, Dorothy K. (May 17, 1909 - February 9, 2007)
Dorothy L. Grottke, age 97, of Colonial Center, Colby, started her journey home on February 9, 2007.
Dorothy was born May 17, 1909, in Granton Township to Mary (Kelpin) and Herman Scheeler. She was united in marriage to William "Bill" Grottke in 1929. After farming the home farm in Granton, where Arlene and Billy were born, they went on the road with bridge and road crews. Dorothy cooked the crew meals and made life long friendships with the other families.
They then bought and ran the Abbotsford Clothing store in Abbotsford, Wis. The decision was made to move to Sauk City where they purchased the Grottke’s Rooming House in 1956, which she ran for 40 years. In 1999 she moved back to the Abbotsford area to be near her sisters. Throughout her long lived life, she always was there for anyone who needed help. Her heart and home wee always open welcoming someone whether it was a meal, or a bed or an ear. She never forgot a birthday or an anniversary.
She loved family, children, cooking, crocheting, and quilting, a good game of euchre or skip-bo and telling stories.
Dorothy is survived by a granddaughter, Donna Schmitz, of Sauk City; a grandson, David (Nancy) Schmitz, of Prairie du Sac; three great-grandchildren; one, great-great-great grandchild; nieces and nephews; and loving friends, Joan Marg and Linda Caflisch.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill; daughter, Arlene Schmitz; a son, Billy Jr.; sisters, Edna Marg and Gertrude Amacher; and a brother, Carl Scheeler.
Services were held Tuesday Feb. 13, at the Maurina Funeral Home in Abbotsford, Wis. The Reverend Dr. Paul C. Hunsicker officiated. Inurnment will take place in the spring in the Abbotsford Public Cemetery.
