Local Happenings

Two auto loads of the Study club ladies went to Merrillan Tuesday afternoon, where they were guests of the club ladies of that village at a club gathering. Over sixty members and guests were present. The same afternoon the Excelsior club ladies were guests of Mrs. Iffland in Houghtonburg.

One of the items crowded out last issue was the visit of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Crume, of Viroqua, at the homes of W. F. Hein and Mrs. Cora Stanley on Mother’s Day.

Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Short were in Eau Claire Sunday to spend the day with their daughter, Mrs. Don Sherwood, and family. Their daughter Miss Caryl, was also there from Appleton, having attended the musical festival Saturday. Miss Caryl will receive her degree in music at the close of college this spring.

Oscar J. Olson came over from Winona last Friday, and served his connection with the Tesaco service station. Morris Olson, who came here with Mr. Olson when the station was purchased, now has charge and will operate the station under his name.

Fishermen are telling of their good catches on the first day out and some of the stories are believable. Sam Fitzmaurice and wife, Guy Pierce and wife, Levi Fitzmaurice and Milt and Wesley Washburn were at Moon Lake and had good catches. At Hatfield numerous good catches were made. And those fishing at the head waters of Lake Emerson had even better luck, which shows that if pays to fish and trade at home.

Floyd Dickinson is a patient at the Marshfield hospital, where he is a sufferer with a heart ailment, and a stomach rupture. He will be at the hospital for some time.

Ben Hart returned from the veteran’s hospital at Minneapolis the last of the week, where he submitted to an operation. He is again at work at his welder in the garage.

Little Patsy Gault, of Eau Claire is spending the week with her aunt, Mrs. E. K. Noyes.

Mrs. L. J. Laffe has been numbered with the ill with an attack of rheumatism the past couple of weeks.

Geo. Thompson and wife, of Melrose, were Sunday guests at the home of C. P. Olson.

Mrs. Cora Stanley and her mother, Mrs. Rhoda Phillips, expect to leave the fore part of next week for Detroit Lakes, Minn., to spend the summer months with their brother and son, D. I. Phillips.

In the first ball game of the season Sunday Houghtonburg started on the way to a championship by a win of 9 to 5 over Willard.

Note of Thanks - I want in this way to thank all the friends who remembered me in any way while I was at the hospital; those who sent me cards and letter’s or who visited me; it was all much appreciated. - Geo. Squires, Sr.
