Green, Mary E. (16 DEC 1852 - 3 SEP 1938)

Mary Ellen Taylor was born in Chicago, Ill., December 16, 1852. At an early age she came with her family to Clark county and settled in the southeast part of the present township of Loyal.

On the 19th of March 1871 she was united in marriage to George Green who came to Loyal from Dodge county in the spring of 1866 and settled on a homestead of 169 acres located two and one-half miles southeast of the present village of Loyal.

In the late 70’s or early 80’s they moved to the village of Loyal where she remained until sometime near thanksgiving 1937 when she entered the Morrow Memorial Home for the Aged at Sparta, where on Saturday, Sept. 3, 1938, death brought release from a lingering illness.

To this union were born five children, Etta, Mrs. Andrew Schweiger who preceded her mother in death about twenty-six years ago, Daisy, Mrs. S. H. Garvin of Edgemore, Idaho, Mattie, Mrs. L. J. Randales of Marshfield, Lottie, Mrs. Richard Dekow, of Beloit, Wis., and one son James who died in Infancy.

Mrs. Green was a great lover of flowers and her home as long as she was able to work among them was surrounded by beautiful beds of flowers.

Coming to Clark county when it was covered with immense forests she with her husband who preceded her in death in 1926 lived to see the transition from a wilderness to fruitful farms and beautiful homes.

Her funeral was held in the Loyal Methodist church Tuesday P. M. Rev. Gaylord of the Greenwood Methodist church officiating. Miss McDermid, matron of the Morrow memorial home attended the funeral. Others from out of town attending were her daughters Mrs. Mattie Randales and sons of Marshfield and Mrs. Lottie Diekow and daughter of Beloit, also Mr. and Mrs. Fred Garvin of Sparta.

Burial was in the Loyal cemetery beside her husband.

Her death leaves another vacancy in the fast thinning ranks of Loyal’s early settlers.
