Lawrence, John "Jack" W. (? - Sept. 1934)
Funeral services for J. W. Lawrence, who passed away at the hospital at Black River Falls about 5:00 o’clock last Saturday afternoon, after a month of intense suffering, were held at the Odd Fellow Hall, Tuesday afternoon, and were attended by many members of the order and friends. Rev. E. A. Wolfe, preached the burial sermon, and the rites of the order were given by J. C. Johnson and S. R. Newton. Numerous relatives and friends and also members of the Odd Fellows lodge came from away to attend the services. Burial was in the Curtis Cemetery in Garden Valley.
John W. Lawrence, one of a family of three children, was born *[portion of this is cut off and unavailable at the time of transcribing.]
For many years he was engaged in insurance work and was one of the incorporators of the Farmers Life. He served as postmaster eight years and was chosen as a member of the town board several times. To each public duty he always gave the best that was in him. Mr. Lawrence enjoyed a wide acquaintance in this part of the state. He was a member of the local Odd Fellows lodge.
One of the happiest events of his later life was the celebration tendered him and his wife by the community last April upon the occasion of their golden wedding day.
Mr. Lawrence is survived by is his wife, two sons, and his sister, Mrs. Anna Bacclius, of Springfield, Ill. His brother, Asa, died last July.
It would be difficult to measure the influence that "Jack" Lawrence has wielded upon his home community. Certain it is that no other Humbird citizen enjoyed a wider acquaintance or was more highly esteemed among his friends and neighbors. He was a booster by nature and to every local project of advancement he gave generously of his time and influence. He loved the children and the children loved him. Possessed of rare sense of humor, quick of wit and speech and of pleasing personality he made friends readily and kept them. Whatever his faults, his virtues far out numbered them.
