Neillsville Students’ Greenhouse Blossoms (2024)
(Could not bring up picture to post it)
The FFA Neillsville High School greenhouse has several hanging floral baskets
and ornamental grasses for sale May 4.
June Thompson/Clark County Press
By June Thompson
Neillsville High School FFA students opened their greenhouse to the public
Saturday, May 4. There were hanging baskets, plants, and ornamental grasses for
sale.
Agriculture teacher, Carla Byrne was involved with helping her students with the
greenhouse. “I wanted my horticulture class to have ‘hands-on’ experience,” she
said. “We were growing food for the lunch program. This is the first time the
school has done the sale. I always wanted a greenhouse sale, so we’re trying
it.”
There were several hanging baskets, perfect for Mother’s Day, and ornamental
grasses to create a garden. The greenhouse had veggie plants as well.
“We grew lettuce, peas, and tomatoes for the salad bar at school,” said Byrne.
“We grew lettuce hydroponically. We started growing the end of January; we could
because it was so warm.”
Byrne made certain her students were involved with the floral hanging baskets.
“The FFA students helped me with the flower baskets.” “We have four different
varieties,” she said. “I love the way the baskets look.”
Byrne has favorite plants. “The Coleus is my favorite,” she said. “It’s a good
filler for pots and it’s colorful. The Bunny Tail is very soft.” Byrne
encouraged a guest to touch the plant. “It’s very soft,” she said. “It is an
ornamental grass.”
There were plenty of single flowers available for sale. “We plant a lot of
Marigolds,” said Byrne. “I love Marigolds. I really love vegetable gardens,
too.”
The greenhouse opened at 8:30 a.m. for the first sale. When asked how the sale
was going, Byrne commented, “so far, so good.” Her goal is to have the
greenhouse next year. “I’d like to have my horticultural students involved,” she
said.
FFA student Paige Voigt helped with the greenhouse. “I like it a lot. It turned
out good. It was a learning experience.”
Another FFA student, Morgan Strangfeld, was helping in the greenhouse. “This
allows kids to be ‘hands-on’— physically seeing different parts of the plant.”
Strangfeld said. She also had a favorite plant in the greenhouse. “I’m very
impressed with how our hanging plants look.”
