Engel, Becky Jean (17 Jun. 1944 - 15 Oct. 1945)

Spencer people were shocked and grief stricken Monday afternoon at the news of the tragic death of little Becky Jean Engel, 18-month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Engel, who was drowned when she fell into a lily pool near her father’s greenhouse at Spencer about 2:30 on Monday.

Becky Jean had been playing out of doors and evidently had followed two pet kittens toward the rock garden and had fallen into the lily pool that contained about eight inches of water. She had been out of sight of her mother only a few minutes. Dr. Callahan was called, and the tot was rushed to St. Joseph’s hospital at Marshfield for resuscitation, but all attempts were unsuccessful.

Sympathy of Spencer people goes out to Mr. and Mrs. Engel and daughter, Kathleen, in this hour of deep trouble.

Becky Jean Engel was born June 17th, 1944, at Spencer and passed away Monday, Oct. 15th. Besides her parents, she leaves one sister, Kathleen, 5, and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Engel, Spencer, and Mr. and Mrs. Sisco, Greenwood.

A short service was held at the Swarthout Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon, followed by services at 2:00 p.m. at the Methodist church in charge of the Rev. Ellery Beal, with burial in the Spencer cemetery, Pallbearers were Valerie Phillip, Eunice Griepentrog, Margery Hoftiezer and Shirley Shupe. Those carrying flowers were Mary Ann and Audrey Messer, two Karau sisters, Yvonne Gall and Lucille Freeman.
