Cowles, Edward M. (23 APR 1870 - 11 JAN 1939)

Edward Marvin Cowles was born April 23, 1870 in the Town of Leroy, Dodge County, Wisconsin to Charles Wesley and Mary Ann Cowles. He resided there until1905 when he moved to South Byron, where he died at 11:45 P. M. Wednesday, Jan. 11, 1939 following a stroke sustained early Monday.

He was married on Dec. 27, 1894 at South Byron to Hattie Ann McLean, who survives him. To this union were born three sons and one daughter; Arthur who died in 1923 leaving his wife Grace and two children, Dorothy and Robert of Milwaukee; Alfred, of Hudson, Wis., his wife Edith and six children, Donald, Marjorie, Ralph, Gerald, Jackie and Wesley. Alice, Mrs. J. R. Steiner, of Loyal, her husband Jacob and son Roger; Lawrence of Loyal, his wife Loretta and daughter Dolores. Also a foster son, Edward Blank of South Byron, his wife Margaret and daughter Donna Jean; a sister Mrs. Hattie Richardson of Neillsville; a brother Albert and his wife Florence of Eagle Bend, Minn., four nieces and one nephew. A brother, Frank Cowles of Oakfield preceded him in death in 1930.

He was a member of the M. E. Church for 50 years, the M. W. A. Lodge and Equitable Reserve Association, and was school clerk for over twenty years. He was a kind and loving husband and father, good neighbor and esteemed friend who will be sadly missed by the community in which he lived many years.

The deceased was connected with the Tribune as an inactive partner from March 17, 1925 to February 1, 1927.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 14th, at 1:30 P. P. M. from the residence and 2:00 P. M. from the M. E. Church in South Byron, the Rev. A. E. Attwood, pastor, officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Robert McClain sang two appropriate hymns accompanied by Mrs. F. E. Howard. There were beautiful floral offerings. Burial was in the family lot, Avoca Cemetery, Oakfield. Pallbearers were S. H. Bird, Chas. Bloohm, F. E. Howard, Emil Kobow, Austin Case and Geo. Tullsdge.

R. Steiner and son Roger, Loyal, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. Will Tidyman, Oak Center, Wis., Mr. Sebastian Meyer and son Thomas of Leroy, Mrs. Geo. Oechsner, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Thurk of Leroy, the Misses Martha, Emma and Louise Smith of Leroy, Mr. Carl Howard, Mrs. Mary McClain, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver McClain, Mr. and Mrs. Walter McLean, Mr. and Mrs. Miner Culver of Fond du Lac, Wis., Mrs. Jennie Cowles, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Cowles, Mrs. F. Backhaus, Oakfield, Wis., also many friends from surrounding communities.
