Hayes, Lucius (25 JUL 1848 - 5 JUN 1934)
Lucius Hayes, aged 85 years, 10 months and 10 days, passed away of old age at his home in Sheboygan Falls on Tuesday evening, June 5th. He was born on July 25th, 1848 in the Town of Eden, Fond du Lac County, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Quimby Hayes. In the year 1878 he was united in marriage to Miss Paulina Ulrich in Fond du Lac County. The following year they moved to Clark County, being among the earliest settlers in this locality. After living for many years on a fine farm which they made for themselves out of the wilderness in the town of Reseburg, they moved to this village and resided here for several years, during which time Mr. Hayes served as village marshal a number of terms. On Feb. 22, 1907, his wife passed away. Since that time he has lived with his son John Hayes and family, continuing to live in Thorp until 1924, when he moved with Mr. and Mrs. John Hayes to Sheboygan Falls, where he has since made his home. He leaves to mourn besides his son, John Hayes, one granddaughter, Mrs. Ben Unferth and five great-grandchildren of Lomira, Wis.; two brothers, J.J. Hayes of Thorp and Frank Hayes of Lomira, and three sisters, Mrs. Fred Grandman and Mrs. Guy Nichols of Lomira, and Mrs. Thel Nichols of Nebraska.
Funeral services were conducted at Sheboygan Falls on Thursday afternoon by a nephew of the deceased, Rev. William Hayes of Milwaukee, and four nephews of the deceased furnished the singing. On Friday the remains were brought to Thorp and he was laid to rest by the side of his wife in the village cemetery. Rev. James Irish officiating at the grave.
