Mr./Mrs. Fred (50th Anniv. - 1 Jan. 1930)

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dins celebrated their fiftieth or golden wedding anniversary at their home here in Colby Wednesday, January first, immediate relatives being present only on that auspicious event. The home was gaily decorated with golden streamers and gold flowers for the occasion and the afternoon and evening was spent playing cards. A sumptuous dinner was served at noon and again in the evening. This was also the eleventh wedding anniversary of their daughter and son in law, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Ebert, Jr.

Mr. Dins was born December 15th, 1854, in Pommern, Germany, and came to the United States in June 1867, when thirteen years of age. Mrs. Dins was born in West Prussia, Germany, July 25th, 1859, and they were married at Fond du Lac, Wis., January 1st 1880, where they were both employed. In January, 1880, they moved to this section and settled on a track of land which is now the Otto Dins farm. At that time, this was still a dense forest, but, by hard work and privations, built this splendid farm. At that time, there were no fine roads as we have now and provisions had to be carried home over a trail through the woods. After this farm was cleared, they cleared what is now the Albert Dins farm. Both farms consist of 100 acres.

At the time Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dins came to this locality, the mode of conveyance was by the use of oxen and "jumpers," and Mr. and Mrs. Dins had two oxen which they purchased for $140.00 which was considered a considerable sum of money those days. Later, Mr. Dins broke two steers for this purpose and sold his oxen for $150. A number of years later, however, he purchased horses. Like most farmers of this time, they started out with but one cow, which for the most part, served the purpose of a family cow. The greatest income from the farm came from the sale of logs and wood, several large saw mills being in this section at the time.

They have two sons and four daughters - Otto Dins, Albert Dins, Mrs. Emma Staffeil, Mrs. Amelia Wiersig, Mrs. Louise Schultz and Mrs. Ida Ebert. Also twenty-one grand children.

A picture of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dins is on page five of this paper.
