Kem, Mary A. (21 Dec 1925 - 1 MAY 2007)

Mary A. Kern, 81, Heritage Manor, Rice Lake, died on Tuesday, May 1, 2007, at Lakeview Medical Center, following a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 5, at St. Peter and Paul Church, Weyerhaeuser. Burial was in the Island Lake Cemetery. Pallbearers were Eric Nyhagen, Adam Kern, Shayne Kucko, Ron Stepanek, Russell Kern, Joshua Kern and Sayre Ystad.

Mary Anita Kroll was born on Dec. 21, 1925, at home at Island Lake, Rusk County, to Henry and Katherine (nee Nondorf) Kroll. She was a lifelong resident of the Weyerhaeuser/Island Lake area. She had a fulfilling life. After high school, she moved to Chicago where she was employed at a defense plant. While in Chicago, she pursued and earned her pilot’s license. She then moved to Mankato, Minn., where she graduated from St. Catherine’s Nursing College. She was employed at the Ladysmith hospital as an LPN for three years. After that, she devoted her life to motherhood and being a housewife. She married Clarence Everett Kern on July 21, 1950, at St. Mary’s Church, Bruce. He died on May 17, 2002. She spent six years previous to residing at Heritage Manor near her daughter, Carol Ystad, in Greenwood. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Greenwood and St. Peter and Paul Church, Weyerhaeuser. Her favorite times were spent with family and friends. She always had a smile and a kind word for everyone.

Survivors include one son, Everett (Carol) Kern, Rice Lake; five daughters, Rose Ann Kern, Macca, Ky., Katherine (Larry) Linden, Owatonna, Minn., Susan (Mike) Kueko, Rice Lake, Carol (Randy) Ystad, Greenwood, and Darcy (Alan) Tanner, Pulaski, Tenn.; 14 great grandchildren, Eric Val, Ron, Shayne, Dana, Heidi, Russell, Allison, Joshua, Sayre, Brent, Tyler, and Jared; six great-grandchildren, Dylan, Amir, Wyatt, Kendyl, Nevaeh, and Roman; a brother-in-law, John Salk, Rock Falls, Ill.; and sisters-in-law, Eleanora Kroll, Weyerhaeuser, and Pat Kroll, Eau Claire.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Clarence; five brothers, Harry, William, Karl and Don; and four sisters, Eleanor, Catherine, Betty and Ruth.

Nash-Jackan Funeral Home, Inc., Bruce, assisted the family with arrangements.
