Broeking, Carl H. (June 1, 1922 - May 13, 2007)

Carl H. Broeking, 84, of Merrill, passed away to his final home in heaven Sunday evening, May 13, 2007, at Bell Tower Residence under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services.

Carl was born June 1, 1922, on the family farm in the Town of Edson, Chippewa County, to Harry L. and Olga (Grimm) Broeking. He attended the rural Popple Grove School and graduated from Stanley High School with the class of 1940.

He married Regina Gorsegner on May 31, 1947, at St. Paul’s Ev Lutheran Church rural Thorp. After farming in the Stanley area, Carl and his family moved to Wausau in 1951, where he became a member of the Wausau Fire Department. In 1955 they returned to farming in the Town of Corning, Lincoln County.

After retiring from farming in 1973, Carl had a new home built on a parcel of the farmland where he resided until four days prior to his passing. He had been a bulk milk hauler for Pauley’s and Inofoods and had been employed by the Merrill Area Public Schools for ten years. Most recently he had been a greeter at Wal-Mart in Merrill for 13 years until November, 2002, a position he thoroughly enjoyed and felt privileged to become acquainted with the associates and customers.

Carl enjoyed visiting with people. He loved horses and had special memories of his horse, Sandy, that he had owned during his childhood. Another special memory was learning to fly a Piper Club that he shared with some of his friends in the 40’s. He specially enjoyed sledding and as late as the winter of 2005-06, he sledded down the slopes in front of his residence. Carl was a member of Trinity Ev Lutheran Church, Town of Berlin, and had served on various committees.

Survivors besides his wife, Regina, of nearly 60 years, are one son, Bruce, of Merrill; three daughters: Judy (John) Breneman of Gothenburg, Sweden, Nancy (Gerald) Winchell of Mayville, WI, and Joann (Tim) Larkee of N. Fort Myers, FL; seven grandchildren: Bruce (Heather) Broeking, Jr. of Merrill, Mike Broeking of Wausau, Rick Broeking of Merrill, J. David Breneman of Newcastle Australia, Joylyn Breneman of London, England, Matthew Winchell of Madison, WI, and Kira Winchell of Mayville, WI; two great-grandchildren: McKenzie and Bryce Broeking; one sister, Dorine Kluenker of Manitowoc; his mother-in-law, Ella Gorsegner of Thorp; one sister-in-law, Helen Davis of Canton, MN; and one brother-in-law, Leonard Gorsegner of Stillman Valley, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents.

The funeral service was held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, May 18, at Trinity Ev Lutheran Church (WELS), 15809 County Road FF, Merrill, with Pastor Jeffrey Schmidt officiating. Visitation was at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Taylor-Stine Funeral Home, Merrill, assisted the family.
