The residence of R. B. Salter had a narrow escape from fire, Saturday night. A lamp hanging in the archway between the two parlors was turned up a little too high enough so that the woodwork a the top of the arch caught fire from it. Dick sat with his back to it, reading , and was first aroused by the cracking of the flames. When he looked up he found a little blaze that required several pails of water to subdue. The loss was not great, yet, will not fall short of twenty-five dollars, mostly from water, fully covered by insurance.
The junior enjoyed a ride out to Green Grove, Friday evening, in company with A. H. Booth, and called on Wm. Zassenhaus, the postmaster and merchant prince, Nels Olson proprietor of the Wisconsin House, and Herman Laabs, proprietor of the cheese factory, and found them all happy as clams at high water and doing a rushing business. The curing room of the cheese factory contains one hundred and ten cheese, and Mr. Laabs says, the factory is now receiving over 2,000 pounds of milk daily.
The children of the village will observe Children’s day, next Sunday afternoon, in the M.E. Church. The program will consist of speaking, singing, etc. This day should have been observed Sunday, June 8th, but on account of the short time left for children to learn their pieces, it was thought best to postpone it for two weeks. Everybody should attend.
The fourth of July will be widely celebrated, this year.
