Charles, John (24 DEC 1822 - 12 MAR 1898)
Seldom is one called upon to record so great a bereavement as that which has befallen the Charles family during the past week.
Mrs. Lydia A. Charles, aged 69 years and 3 days, died Friday, Mar 11, 1898, of pneumonia, and her husband, John Charles, died the next day, Saturday, March 12, of heart failure, aged 75 years, 2 months and 16 days.
A double funeral was held Sunday afternoon, at the house, Rev. W.T. Hendren officiating, and the aged pair were laid to rest side by side, after services that touched all hearts.
John Charles was born in Mercer, Maine, Dec. 24, 1822; was married at Rome, Maine in 1845; came to Wisconsin Dec. 3, 1859, and located on the homestead where they died.
Mrs. Charles was born at Rome, Maine, March 8, 1829, where she lived until marriage to Mr. Charles, and a short time after that, with him, and since then her life’s history has run along serenely with his, peacefully and prosperously.
They leave seven children, all living here (Neillsville, Clark Co., Wis.) except William who lives in South Dakota. They are: Lyman, William, Sewell, John, Mrs. Josie Geeslin, Mrs. Abe Lynch and Madeline.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Charles were highly respected old settlers, both noted for sterling qualities of head and heart, and both faithful in every relation of life. They were tenderly cared for in their declining years by their children. Mr. Charles had been an invalid for several years.
The family fells deeply grateful to the fiends whose helpfulness was so timely and who sympathy was so abundant.
