Loyal - 20 March 1885

Items are scarce, no weddings to report, but we have the death of one of our citizens, to record: that of Mr. John Reek, after a short illness of only a few days.

Prohibition or license of the liquor traffic is the all important theme that is beginning to occupy the minds of the voters now, on the eve of election.

Andrew Emerson reports four and a half million feet of logs in Rock Creek as the result of his winter’s work.

Our town if growing. Two new blacksmith shops have lately been built here - Mr. V. Eishwig on the west side and C. Branch on the East side of Main Street, north of Mulbey Bros’ and Grave’s Stores; those, with Harry Philpott’s shop, will have a tendency to bring farmers from a distance to get farming implements and general blacksmithing done, as that branch of industry is in the hands of competent men who are bound to give good work for many received.

Our merchants have to get on a new stock of goods every week to fill up the vacancies in their stores caused by the sales made, as people from other towns are beginning to find out that it is for their interest to come this way to leave some of their cash for dry goods, groceries, hardware and harness. All we lack now to make Loyal one of the largest cities in Clark County is a railroad, cheese factory and street cars. Any one with a few hundred dollars capital to invest in a cheese factory in a desirable location, is requested to enclose stamp to pay return postage and address Box 15, New Addition, Loyal, Wis., and all information in regard to the same will be cheerfully given.

The closing exercises of the school in Dis. No. 5, were held in the school-house March 12th. The exercises were made up of music, essays, dialogues and rehearsals, which made it an enjoyable affair. The teacher was Miss Frona Castner. Miss Castner will make another of Clark County’s successful teachers.
