Mayer, Norman M. (January 29, 1931 - July 16, 2007)
Norman M. Mayer, 76 of Bangor and formerly of Humbird left his early home to join our heavenly Father in the early morning hours of Monday, July 16, 2007. He was surrounded at his residence by his family and held in his wife Donna’s loving arms when he passed. It was a peaceful passing for a gentle man.
Norman was born January 29, 1931, in Eau Claire to parents Anton and Georgia (Gilles) Mayer. He graduated from Humbird High School. He married Donna Hytry April 24, 1957, in Marshfield.
Norman took over the family farm in the Humbird area at a young age. He taught his family the value of good hard work and love of the land. He retired from farming in 1995 and moved to Bangor in 1999. He was also employed at Brenengen Auto Group in Sparta for five years until his illness prevented him from continuing.
Norman was an active member of various church and community organizations, including the Knights of Columbus, Mentor Town Board and Cenex Board. His special pastimes included hunting, trout fishing, square dancing, gardening and, most importantly, laughing with his children and grandchildren.
His survivors include his wife, Donna (of 50 years); three daughters, Carmen (Brian) Mashak of Bangor, Barbara (Vernon) Gander of La Crosse and Kathleen (Randall) Stello of West Salem; four sons, Thomas (Suzanne) Mayer of Augusta, Timothy (Bethany) Mayer of Humbird, Michael (Laura) Mayer of Onalaska and David Mayer of West Salem; four sisters, Louise Genteman of Marshfield, Dorothy (Bernard) Laufenberg of Alma Center, Marie (Bernard) Kaiser of Loyal and Lorraine (Jeff) Rayhorn of Long Prairie, MN; 11 grandchildren, Megan (Nick Abbott) Mashak, Kent Mashak, Zachary and Karla Gander, Melissa and Chase Stello, Grace and Emily Mayer, Trevor and Sierra Mayer and Lucas Mayer; one great-grandchild to be born in October; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother, Anthony.
Funeral services for Norman M. Mayer will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 20, 2007, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Fairview (rural Humbird), with Reverend Jude Dioka officiating. Burial will take place in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home, Hixton, Thursday evening from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a 6:30 p.m. parish prayer service and may also call one hour prior to services Friday at the church.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Kurt Oettel and the Hospice program, both of Gundersen Lutheran, for all of their gentle care.
