High School Graduates Received Diplomas Tuesday Evening
The Colby, Wisconsin high school commencement exercises at the Badger Theatre Tuesday evening were attended by a large number of parents, relatives and friends of the graduates when thirty-seven young people received tokens of four years of successful efforts in academic fields. The class is one less than last year when the largest class in the history of the school graduated. The class made a fine appearance on the stage and the class motto, "Honor Lies at Labor’s Gate," hung conspicuously above the stage.
Robert Lohrie, superintendent of the Chippewa Falls schools, delivered the commencement address and talked about the depression. He claimed we advance in waves, advancing and retarding, but always coming out of depressions. He pointed out the depressions and inventions of the past and compared them to the present situation and felt that this generation would meet their problems just as our forefathers met their problems. The greatest task, at present, is to solve the question of distribution of goods and food for we manufacture enough for all but fall down when it comes to distributing these among the people. In the solution of the problems of this country, he placed his greatest faith in the people of the country and the institutions, among the latter he placed the constitution and the schools.
O. H. Heintz, who presented the diplomas, pointed out that this was the most successful year of the school as far as activities were concerned and expressed a hope that the graduates would hereafter perform the tasks assigned to them to the best of their ability.
The graduates are Marie Baumgart, Wilbur Becker, Emma Billmann, Gertrude Dehne, Henrietta Draeger, Irma Feind, Grace Fleischauer, Cornelius Foster, Margaret Franz, Mont Harter, Arthur Hemmy, Jr., Wanda Hemmy, Margaret Hertz, Norman Kobs, Bernadette Kraus, Genevieve Krepsky, Marie Kriplean, Clinton Loos, Marie Maas, Melville Meach, Edith Olson, Alice Orth, Lois Peden, Wilgert Rasmussen, Theodore Reel, Anita Runzheimer, Ruth Schulte, Amelia Sukup, Mary Umhoefer, Doris Vanderhoof, John Velek, Francis Wallace, Robert Smith, Clarence Wiegman and Ione Witte of Colby, Gertrude Leonhard of Spencer, and Wilbert Miller of Curtiss, Wis.
