Sawyer, Edith (27 NOV 1856 - SEP 1899)
(Menominee Herald)
The angel of death has visited the home of one of Menominee’s most highly esteemed citizens, Mrs. R.J. Sawyer, on Monday morning shortly after 8 o’clock, and carried away a light of the home, the wife and mother, Mrs. Edith Clark Sawyer, aged 42 years and 10 months. Mrs. Sawyer’s death was due to consumption, and during the two months previous to her death she failed rapidly. Although fully away that no human aid could save her, all the means that medical science and skillful nursing could devise were employed to make easy the sufferer’s last hours. Hers was a loving nature, full of Christian graces, patient in suffering and approaching her fate with a calm and beautiful resignation.
Mrs. Sawyer was born in California on Nov. 27, 1856, was married on her 21st birthday, Nov. 27, 1877, and came to Menominee with her husband in July 1879. She had been a member of the Episcopal Church here since the congregation was organized.
Many friends sympathize deeply with the bereaved husband upon whom has severely fallen the hand of affliction. In the loss of his firstborn and beloved son some years ago and now his true wife and helpmeet, he has drunken deeply of the cup of sorrow. Two daughters remains to share his grief over the loss of their best friend.
The funeral will take place on Wednesday at the home on Main St., at 10:30 o’clock, services to be conducted by Bishop G. Mott Williams, assisted by Rev. Dr. Schepeler of Marinette.
