Shafto, Thomas Newman (5 June 1934 – 24 October 2023)
On October 24, 2023, Thomas Newman Shafto, age 89, passed away peacefully at
Wells Nature View with his wife of 68 years by his side. Surrounded by his
loving family, Tom took his last breath knowing that he would be welcomed into
the arms of Jesus.
Born on June 5, 1934, in Neptune, New Jersey, Tom was one of two children born
to Thomas K. and Margaret (nee Newman) Shafto. He graduated from Neptune High
School in 1952 and later graduated from Graham School for Dairymen. Tom started
his own poultry business at the age of ten, selling eggs, dressed chickens and
turkeys. He also caponized chickens for area poultry farms. After high school he
worked on the family dairy farm and was a 4-H leader.
Tom married the love of his life, Patricia Throckmorton on August 7, 1955, and
continued his farming career until selling his cattle and becoming employed at
Fred McDowell Road Construction. Working alongside his father and mentor, Tom
would eventually fill his father’s shoes as the office manager and estimator
upon his death in 1963.
Together Tom and Pat raised three children, Tom Jr., Susan and Patti. In 1969
Tom decided to move the family to Mercersburg, Pennsylvania and continue doing
what he loved most…farming. Tom again sold the farm and cattle and returned to
New Jersey in 1972 where he worked as a licensed realtor.
Because of his love of farming, he purchased bare ground in 1976 in the small
rural Town of Loyal, Wisconsin and moved the family 1,200 miles to what they
would eventually consider home. Partnering with his son, Tom Jr., they built
their farm to what is now a large dairy operation with four generations of
ownership. Tom was meticulous with a hammer and nails. His garage shed and
workshop, along with other projects he constructed on the farm continue to stand
the test of time.
Serving God and his church were very important throughout Tom’s life. As a youth
he served as regional vice president of the Methodist Youth Fellowship in New
Jersey. He was also a youth leader and lay leader and speaker. Tom and his wife
were charter members of Our Father’s House, a community Christian church in
Chili, Wisconsin, where he served as trustee for many years.
Tom is survived by his wife Patricia, Marshfield and his three children – Thomas
(Cathy) Shafto of Loyal, Susan (Paul) Haebig of Marshfield, and Patti
Shafto-Carlson of Marshfield. He is further survived by his twelve grandchildren
– Karen (Matt) Bloom, Mandy (Todd) Foster, Nick (Jenna) Lindner, Michael (Lavonda)
Shafto, Elizabeth (Derek) DeBrosse, Joshua (Erin) Shafto, Curtiss (Samantha)
Lindner, Jon (Liza) Shafto, Ethan Shafto, Courtney Shafto, Breanna (Zach) Schuld
and Erik (Sierra) Carlson, 24 great grandchildren, and nephews Paul Marine and
Ray Marine.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas K. and Margaret Shafto, his
sister Mary Jane (nee Shafto) Marine, and daughter at birth, Karen Suzanne
Shafto.
The family would like to thank the staff at Wells Nature View and St. Croix
Hospice for the exceptional care and support. A very special thank you goes to
hospice nurse, Breanna.
Visitation will take place on Friday, November 3 from 1-4 p.m. at Rembs Funeral
Home in Marshfield. On Saturday, November 4, there will be an additional
visitation time from 10-11 a.m. followed by the service and meal at 11 a.m. at

By June Thompson
It is that time of year for crafts, harvest and farmers’ markets. It brings
people out to bear the cool weather and see local folks they might not otherwise
see in downtown Neillsville.
This year’s annual Autumn Harvest Celebration was held in downtown Neillsville
on Saturday, Oct 14. Organized by the Chamber of Commerce volunteers, executive
director Tea Moscinski said this community event had something to offer
everyone. She and the other committee members, Lori Buffington, Janalee Kapusta,
Amie D’Huyvetter and Michelle Fremont started organizing the event in July.
There were 30 vendors this year who came from near and far to show their wares
and talk to local folks.
Dianne and Doyle Hooker from Hawkins were one of the vendors attending the
event. Their craft was painting and woodworking, called “Creations for Gracie.”
“Doyle does the cutting and [prepping of the wood],” said Dianne Hooker.
She has been working on her craft for 17 years.
“If I can carry it, I will paint on it,” Dianne Hooker said.
Dianne Hooker admitted she paints all day. Her husband finds some of the wood
and she paints on it.
When asked why she paints on wood, Dianne Hooker said she likes bringing smiles
and joy to people. The small wooden slabs are brightly painted with various
sayings; whereas the larger ones have scenic landscapes painted on them.
The Hookers’ 13-year-old grandson, Robert, was nearby, displaying a variety of
stones. His interest in geology began four years ago.
“I’d like to become a professional geologist,” Robert Hooker said.
Another vendor, Holly Schultz, from Greenwood, presented her knitted, and
crocheted blankets, head bands and baskets. She called her craft, “Unraveled.”
This was her first year displaying and selling her crafts at the Autumn Harvest.
She has been knitting and crocheting ever since her seventh-grade home economics
class—46 years, she said.
“I love the different yarns and textures that can be made into different
projects,” Schultz said.
She uses all sorts of yarn: cotton, wool, acrylics and mohair. Sometimes, after
starting to crochet something new, she admitted she needed to unravel the
project at the beginning, stating the number of crocheted links might be
incorrect.
Schultz was eager to advertise her craft by wearing a yellow sweatshirt with the
word Unraveled proudly displayed. She also wore a yellow crocheted headband.
Schultz mentioned she would custom-make items.

Munson Bridge Winery Hosts Harvest Fest (2023)
Families, friends and supporters gathered around bonfires and tables outside the
tent at Munson Bridge Winery for Harvest Fest. The festival has been hosted at
Munson Bridge Winery for 17 years. L. B./Clark County Press
By L. B., reporter
The 17th annual Harvest Fest at Munson Bridge Winery took place Oct. 14. The
winery had live music, numerous vendors, and food trucks, bonfires and served
food and drink for the guests. The tent was packed shoulder-to-shoulder with
vendors and people shopping or getting food and drinks. Chandeliers and the live
music from Jim Duesing filled the tent with light and lightheartedness,
respectively.
“It was 17 years ago when it all started,” Sheri Rohland said, owner of Munson
Bridge Winery. “We had friendships—a friend brought his skid steer to get the
cement out of the barn, and we traded wine for that. We had people come and do
the drywall, electricity and we would trade wine with them. This became a way to
pay it forward.”
Rohland is proud to invite many vendors to sell at Munson Bridge Winery free of
entry charge. Some included Stone Press Food Truck, Richard and Co. Donuts,
Glitz and Glam, and Cake Me Away. Vendors were organized by what they were
selling whether food or beauty products.
“There are a lot of start-up businesses here,” Rohland said. “It’s a win-win for
everyone. When Harvest Fest started, people brought apples and pinecones. Now,
we have a vision to help each other out, and I have a great staff to help with
it.
“When we first started working on the barn, there was a swallow that kept
building her nest up there in the loft. I would go up there and knock it down,
and she’d build it again, and I’d knock it down each time. Well, one day she had
three eggs in there, so the nest was there to stay. We were working on the loft
one day, and we saw the mama bird fly around the barn, and then the first baby
joined her, then the second, and then they were all learning to fly together
like that, and, well, it’s been a blessing.
“We want to keep this place family oriented. People have met here; people have
fallen in love here; we’ve had really wonderful times here. It’s been such a
blessing, and the music is good, too.”
The Munson Bridge Winery owners were happy to see so many people attending
Harvest Fest and hope to continue serving their community for as long as they
are able.

Dux, Mary LaVeda (12 April 1955 – 29 October 2023)
Mary LaVeda Dux, age 68, of Neillsville WI passed away peacefully on October 29,
2023, while surrounded by her family at the Marshfield Medical Center, after a
courageous battle with cancer.
Mary was born on April 12, 1955, in Neillsville, to Harry and Esther (Pretsch)
King. She enjoyed living in the Neillsville community her entire life. Mary was
raised on the family farm and received her education in the Neillsville area,
graduating from Neillsville High School in 1973 as the class salutatorian. Mary
continued taking post-graduation courses throughout her working career to
further her knowledge.
While in high school, Mary worked for Ronald and Betty Meihack at the Penguin
during the summers. In her senior year of high school, she was hired to do the
payroll for the Neillsville Foundry, Inc.
On September 29, 1973, she married the love of her life, Eugene Michael Dux, at
St John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Neillsville. Together they proudly
raised two sons, Michael Eugene Dux (West Salem, WI), and Matthew Allen Dux
(Sioux Falls, SD). Her daughter-in-law Brandi (Matthew) Dux was like a daughter
to her. Mary was incredibly blessed with four grandchildren: Everett Dux and
Rory Dux (West Salem) and Emmalyn Dux and Clara Dux (Sioux Falls).
After marrying, Mary and her husband Eugene made their home in Neillsville.
Together they had a hobby farm raising beef cattle and both worked off the farm.
Mary continued to work for the Neillsville Foundry until leaving in 1980 to work
for Production Credit Association in Neillsville as a farm records technician.
When asked to return to work for the Neillsville Foundry, Mary did so in 1984 as
the production scheduler and office manager. In 1990, Mary became a Clark County
employee, first working as an account clerk in the Clerk of Courts, advancing to
Deputy County Clerk in the County Clerk's Office, and finally as the payroll and
benefits coordinator in the Department of Administration. In 2007, she began
working for Citizens State Bank of Loyal at the Neillsville branch and worked
until 2017 when she left to take care of her health issues.
Mary was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Neillsville. She served as the
treasurer for the Calvary Lutheran Church Women's group. She helped with the
financial bookkeeping of the church altar guild. The church and her church
family were very important to Mary; they provided so much support to her through
her cancer journey. Mary was also honored to serve the people of the Town of
Weston, first as their Clerk and then later as the Treasurer. She was a member
of the Over the Garden Gate Clark County Master Gardeners and loved working on
community projects. Mary was a member of P.E.O. Chapter DJ., a sisterhood of
friendship and loyalty promoting educational opportunities for women. She joined
the Red Hats Society for fun and friendship.
In her free time, Mary enjoyed working in her flower garden or visiting gardens
in the area. Flowers were her passion, and she loved to share their beauty with
her friends and family. Those who knew Mary understood just how much she cared
about every project that she was involved with, and Mary was always the person
you turned to for help or support. Her love for crafts and cardmaking brought
joy to her family and friends because of the amount of care and thought that
went into every gift. Mary loved her family deeply and enjoyed every moment she
could spend with them. She especially loved the UTV rides she could take with
her husband, and every moment, occasion, or event spent with her grandchildren
was cherished.
Mary is survived by her husband Eugene, sons Michael Dux and Matthew (Brandi)
Dux; grandchildren Everett Dux, Rory Dux, Emmalyn Dux and Clara Dux; brother
Jerry (Lynn) King of Neillsville; three sisters: Jeannette King of Mosinee, Jean
(Ken) Nicks of Boaz, and Lori (Jim) Gentry of Oshkosh; sister-in-law Kathy
Wegner of Neillsville; three brothers-in-law: Lawrence (Karen) of Pewaukee,

well as many aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother Harry and Esther King; father
and mother in-law Everett and Angelyn Dux; brother-in-law Wayne Wegner and
