Garbrecht, William F. (8 Nov. 1883 - 17 Aug. 1935)
Funeral services for W. F. Garbrecht, age 52, who died as a result of having both legs cut off while working as a switchman for the Soo Line, were held at Christ Evangelical church at Abbotsford Saturday afternoon.
Mr. Garbrecht was employed with a switch crew at Iron Mountain, Michigan, and last week Wednesday, he was riding at the front end of a string of cars which were being switched at the time. He was applying the hand brake when something went wrong and he fell off the car. Car wheels passed over both legs, cutting both off. He was rushed to the hospital at Iron Mountain where he died from the shock and loss of blood. He also sustained a fracture of the left arm and bruises and cuts on his head.
The deceased was born in Readfield, Wis., on Nov. 8, 1883, and has been a resident of Abbotsford the past twenty-four years. He was married to Rebecca M. O’Day at Ashland on April 21, 1909. He was intermittently employed at farming and railroad work until 1919 when he was steadily employed as switchman for the Soo Line. He is survived by his widow and four sons, namely: Harvey of Ft. Snelling, Minnesota; Arthur and George of Abbotsford, Fred of Fairchild.
