Helsten, Hattie (16 July 1899 - 24 Mar. 1954)

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Unity, for Mrs. Elmer Helsten, 54, whose body was found hanging in the second story of a chicken house on the Helsten farm, 3 miles north and five miles east of Spencer at 11:40 a.m. Wednesday morning, by her husband.

The Rev. Claude Vander Stoep, officiated at the services and burial was made in the parish cemetery.

Mrs. Helsten was reported to have been mentally and physically ill for some time and lately had been despondent.

The body reposed at the Swarthout Funeral Home, in Spencer from Friday morning until Saturday noon, when it was taken to Trinity Lutheran Church at Unity.

Pallbearers were Maurice Anderson, Alvin Kloehn, Emil Luepke, Robert Gropp, Walter Anderson and Victor Anderson.

In charge of the many floral offerings were Mrs. Alvin Kloehn, Mrs. Emil Luepke, Mrs. Robert Gropp, Mrs. Margaret Pagel, Mrs. Melvin Ayer, Mrs. Rudy Anderson, Miss Amy Klein, Mrs. Marvin Carlson, Mrs. Walter Anderson and Mrs. Victor Anderson.

Mrs. Helsten, the former Miss Hattie Koch, was born July 16, 1899 at McMillan. She was married September 22, 1931 to Elmer Helsten, in Michigan and they moved to the present farm immediately after that, clearing the land and building the buildings.

She received her education in the Unity Schools and was employed in the Unity Mercantile store for twenty years.

Surviving are her husband, her mother, Mrs. Koch, Unity; two daughters, Miss Joan Helsten, Spencer, and Miss Jean Helsten, a student at St. Joseph’s School of Nursing, Marshfield; two sons, Lloyd and Robert, at home; a sister, Mrs. Alfred Johnson, Unity; and a brother, Milton Koch, Westboro.

J. Anderson, Jim and Jane, Waupaca; Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Kloehn, Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Kloehn, Mr. and Mrs. Reinhold Kloehn, Mr. Otto Kloehn, Mr. and Mrs. Max Woodkey, Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Carlson, Mrs. Irene Steuber, Marshfield; Mr. Martin Hellestad, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Schreier, Madison; Miss Hannah B.
