Gerold, Mary (Aug. 25, 1910 - Aug. 20, 2007)

Mary Gerold, 96, Willard, died on Monday, Aug. 20, 2007, at Saint Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield. Visitation will be held on Friday, Aug. 31, at United Church of Christ, Neillsville, at 10:30 a.m. until time of services at 11 a.m. The Rev. James Mohr will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Neillsville City Cemetery. A gathering of friends and family will be held at the American Legion Hall, Greenwood, following the services at the cemetery.

Mary Ketel was born on Aug. 25, 1910, in Neillsville, to John Emil and Edna (nee Gilman) Ketel. She was baptized and confirmed in the Congregational Church by Pastor Longnecker. She attended the public schools in Neillsville and graduated from the high school in 1924. She then attended Milwaukee Downer College and became associated with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in the Milwaukee office. She was selected to become a member of the Trust Department of the Bank of West Bend where she was employed at the time of her marriage. On Dec. 18, 1937, she married Carl E. Gerold in Ladysmith. They enjoyed 69 years of marriage. She was a member of the D.A.R. from childhood on and she was also a member of the Greenwood Legion Auxiliary. She must have been Sniteman Pharmacy’s oldest customer since her father always brought her to the store and old C.C. would say, "Hello Mary" and give her a piece of candy. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, Port Washington, and a den mother and a member of the Congregational Church, Port Washington. She loved playing bridge and is the sole survivor of a group that played together for more than 49 years. She loved the area around Rock Dam and even helped pour the concrete for the cottage they build on the lake. She loved reading books and then donating them to the church in Port Washington. Her latest home, in Englewood, Fla., was designed together with her husband, Carl, in 1975. Above all she was a lady and will be sadly missed by her husband, God bless her.

She is survived by her husband, Carl, Willard. During her marriage, two children were born. John (Geri) Gerold, Madison, and Paula (Robert) Schreiner, Lake Mills, Iowa. She is also survived by five grandchildren; Mark (Holly) Schreiner, Mary (Charles) Anderson, David Gerold, Lisa (Geovanny) Sarmiento, and Amy (Steve) Carpenter; seven great-grandchildren, Drew and Alex Anderson, Nathan and Joey Schreiner, Zach and Finn Carpenter and Zolia Sarmiento.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Church of Christ, Neilsville.

The Gesche Funeral Home, Neillsville, is assisting the family with arrangements.
