Horswill, Hugh D. (22 June 1916 - 15 Aug. 2005)
Hugh D. Horswill, 89, of 1700 S. River Rd., and formerly of 141 Hillside Ct., died Monday, Aug. 15, 2005, at UW Hospital, Madison. He was born in Greenwood, WI, on June 22, 1916, son of Richard and Libby (Bowen) Horswill. He graduated from Neillsville High School in 1934 and UW Eau Claire with a BS in Education in 1938, and received his Master in Educational Administration from the University of Wyoming. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theatre. Hugh married Doris Elaine Nelson on Aug. 18, 1941, in Chippewa Falls; she preceded him in death in January of 1969. He later married Ethel Arentsen on Feb. 2, 1972, in Janesville.
He taught in Alma Center and Osceola and came to Janesville in 1946, where he taught history and math, and coached football, basketball, and track. Hugh was vice principal at Janesville High School from 1954 until he became principal of Parker High School in 1967. He retired in 1979. He was a member of Janesville Rotary Club, Golden K, 32nd Degree Mason, UW Eau Claire Football Hall of Fame, Janesville Area Retired Teachers, and served on the Janesville Board of Education. He enjoyed golf, bird watching, and playing cards.
He is survived by his wife, Ethel of Janesville; two sons, Robert (Merril) Horswill of Presque Isle, WI, and Paul (Ann) Horswill of Janesville; a daughter, Linda (Vic) Gutierrez of Cashton, WI; three step-children: Mark (Mary Beth) Arentsen of Waukee, IA, Chris (Jeff) Kranz of Monticello and Kurt (Cathy) Arentsen of Minneapolis, MN; seven grandchildren: Nathanial Horswill of Racine, Alexander (Shelly) Horswill of Iowa City, IA, Eric Horswill of Janesville, Elizabeth (Andy) Paull of Freeport, IL, Anna Gutierrez of Vail, CO, Michael Gutierrez of Madison and Adam Berger of Marquette, MI; seven step-grandchildren: Elizabeth, Nathan, Richie, Kimberly, Brian, Jason and Steven; and two great-grandchildren: Ian and Allison Horswill. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers: Edward, Hallie, Robert and Merlin; and two sisters, Edris Paulus and Joyce Wall.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, Aug. 19, 2005, at Schneider Apfel Schneider & Schneider Funeral Home, with Rev. Merle Harberts. Internment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
