Martens, John (17 Oct. 1852 - 12 May 1937)

Funeral services for John Martins, Sr., pioneer resident of Unity, who died of old age complications May 12 at his home three and one-half miles southwest of Unity were held Saturday afternoon at one o’clock at the home and at two o’clock at the Zion Ev. Lutheran church, Rev. O. Hoffmann officiating, and burial was made in the Colby cemetery.

The deceased was born in Germany on Oct. 17, 1852. In 1880 he came to the United States and located at Manitowoc. On August 17 the same year, he was married there to Miss Katrena Reimes who also arrived at Manitowoc from Germany earlier in the year. One year after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Martens came to Unity to their present farm which they developed.

The deceased is survived by his widow and six daughters and four sons, namely - Mrs. Ida LaPoint and Mrs. Irwin Burnett of Unity, Mrs. Joseph Lee and Mrs. C. Lawrence Kinkaid of Minneapolis, Mrs. John Fitchett and Mrs. Harold Neitzel of Milwaukee, Emil and Herman Martens of Unity, Daniel Martens of Spencer and John Martens, Jr., of Junction City. A half brother, in Germany and twenty-seven grand children also survive. Two sons preceded him in death, one dying in infancy and Henry, age 39, at Junction City in Dec. 1935.
