Backa, Carl C. (24 JUN 1864 - 25 AUG 1938)
Carl C. Backa, 74-year-oldtimer resident in this community (Owen, Clark Co., Wis.), passed away at his home early this morning after an illness of two years.
Carl was born June 24, 1864, at Holmstrand near Oslo, Norway. From the time of his confirmation until 1895 he was a sailor. On Dec. 29, 1893, he married Miss Aneta K. Laerum. In 1903 Mr. and Mrs. Backa and family moved from Norway to America, where they came to Owen and settled for a year until 1904, when they moved onto a farm near Black River, west of Owen, where they resided until 1919. At that time Mr. Backa and his family moved to Rio Hondo in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas, where they lived for ten years before returning to their present farm home west of Owen, Wis. Mr. Backa had been in poor health for the past two years, suffering from a stomach ailment.
Mr. Backa is survived by his wife and children, Mrs. Lewis Schulz and Christian Backa of Withee; Arndt Backa of Pittsburgh, Pa; Mrs. Joe Rodgers of Stetsonville, and Mathilda Backa of Milwaukee, also by a brother in New York and three sisters of Oslo, Norway, and eleven grandchildren.
Definite funeral arrangements were not completed at the time of this writing, although services will be held from the Emmanuel Lutheran Church at Longwood.
