Horner, August (9 June 1856 - 14 July 1940)
August Horner died at his home in Colby, Wisconsin, Sunday night at 10 o’clock at the age of 84 years, a stroke of paralysis being the cause of his death. He was stricken Tuesday afternoon, July 9. Funeral services were held at the Lulloff Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon and burial was made in the family lot of the Unity cemetery. Rev. H. Lee, pastor of the Colby M. E. church, officiated and pall bearers were John Miller, Joe Miller, John Untiedt, G. C. Kersten, Joe Sazama and Wm. Krauger.
Mr. Horner was born in Manitowoc county June 9, 1856, and was married at Unity to Miss Theresa Brandner on April 10, 1880. They observed their 60th wedding anniversary this spring. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Horner purchased a tract of land in the town of Beaver where they lived for 15 years. After selling their farm, they purchased a tract of forest land in the town of Green Grove where they lived until 1919 when they moved to the city of Colby which has since been their home.
Surviving are his widow and seven children - Mrs. Paul (Mary) Scheff of Fond du Lac, Mrs. Rudolph (Louise) Benehemann of Sterling, Colorado, Mrs. Michael (Mathilda) Marx of Kenosha, Miss Helen Horner, at home, William and John Horner of Milwaukee and Alvin Horner of Kenosha. Also surviving are a brother, Frank, of the town of Beaver, 19 grand children and two great grand children.
The deceased was numbered among the old settlers who by diligent work and privations built a fine farm. Like all early pioneers, he was of a congenial disposition, a friendly neighbor and a kind husband and father.
