Bernard John Dobrzynski was born on August 17, 1937, in Owen, Wisconsin, to Wallace and Marie (Rataiczyk) Dobrzynski. He was raised on the family farm and received his education at Pineland School, the Thorp Catholic School, and graduated from Thorp High School in 1955. After his discharge from the Navy, Ben was united in marriage to Stephanie "Steffie" Soborowicz on October 8, 1960, at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church, rural Thorp. He worked several different jobs, including Owen Post Company, building barns and sheds for Mike Lew, Joe Lato Construction, and Ace Oil Company, before purchasing a farm in the Town of Hixon in 1961, where he farmed for 32 years. He then sold the farm and moved to a home near Bellinger.

He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, his trout pond, farming, and making wood.
