Carnahan, Danyl Wilfred (26 Feb. 1939 - 9 Aug. 1942)
Danyl W. Carnahan, age 3, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Carnahan of near Owen, was instantly killed Sunday afternoon when he fell into an abandoned well on the farm of his grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Carnahan, seven miles south east of Owen, Wisconsin.
When Mrs. Carnahan heard nothing of the boy for 15 minutes she went to look for him, intending to give him his afternoon nap. She searched in the barn and elsewhere. Returning to the house she noticed that a plank had been removed from the top of the old well, and discovered the child’s body lying in the water, 13 feet below the top of the well.
She called her husband, who climbed down and brought the body up. A doctor was called from Owen and he in turn called Coroner Herbert L. Brown from Neillsville, Wis. Examination revealed that the child had fractured his skull by contact with the stones in the curbing, and was dead when he struck the water, as there was no water in the lungs.
The boy was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Carnahan, who had previously lost two children in infancy, Sharon at six weeks in January, 1938, and Timothy at five days in January, 1940. Danyl Wilfred was born at Sheboygan, Feb. 26, 1939. The parents had moved to the farm on July 1, from Green Bay.
