Funeral services for Mrs. Orion Meckel of Rock Island, Ill., former resident of Colby, were held Saturday morning at 9:00 o’clock at the Lulloff Funeral Home, Rev. L. J. Lang of Colby officiating, and internment was made in the Colby cemetery. Pall bearers were I. M. Firnstahl, Herbert Firnstahl, Leon Steinwand, Herbert Steinwand, Frederick Zassenhaus and Roderick Cook. A requiem high mass had been read Thursday morning, Sept. 10th, in Rock Island before the body was brought to Colby, Wis.
Mrs. Meckel was born August 10, 1900, in Colby, Wis., a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph F. Steinwand. She attended grade school and was a graduate of St. Catherine’s College, St. Paul, Minn. After graduation, she was employed at the Colby State Bank for about two and one-half years, later going to Chicago where she was employed at the Federal Reserve Bank. For fifteen years she was employed at the Rock Island Savings Bank and after that at the Rock Island Bank & Trust Co. She was married to Orion G. Meckel of Rock Island on August 28, 1926, in Chicago. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic church of Rock Island, Ill. She died on September 7th, 1942, at 9:00 o’clock P.M. in St. Anthony’s Hospital following a year’s illness. Death resulted from complications.
Surviving besides her husband are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph F. Steinwand, one sister, Mrs. Walter Mueller and four brothers, Francis and Arnold of Colby, Richard of Detroit, Mich., and Pvt. Joseph L. Steinwand (twin) of Sheppard Field, Texas.
Out of town relatives at the funeral were Orion and George Meckel and Mrs. Hilliard Mason of Rock Island, Ill., Miss Betty Steinwand of Chicago, Mrs. Charles Gay of Hammond, Richard Steinwand of Detroit, Mich., and Pvt. Joseph L. Steinwand of Sheppard Field, Texas.
