Jessie L. Stevenson

Jessie L. Stevenson, 96, of Marshfield died Nov. 18, 2007, at Palliative Care in Saint Joseph's Hospital.

Committal services will be held at St. Mary's Cemetery in Neillsville at a later date.

Rembs/Kundinger Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.

She was born Aug. 26, 1911, in Greenwood to Anthony and Ethel (Carleton) Barr. Jessie graduated from Greenwood High School in 1929, and went to Luther Hospital Nursing School in Eau Claire, graduating in 1932. She did post-graduate course in surgery at Cook County Hospital in Chicago in 1934. She then worked at Western Reserve University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, from 1935 until 1937. She then moved to San Diego and worked at the County Hospital. While in San Diego, she married Robert Hopfer in May 1938. The family moved to Neillsville in 1945. He died Sept. 29, 1963.

She worked at Neillsville Hospital and Nursing Home, retiring as a nursing home supervisor in 1979. Jessie was then married to Carl "Bill" Stevenson on Dec. 8, 1979, in Neillsville and moved to Eleva. Bill died Oct. 13, 2003. Jessie moved to Marshfield in January 2002.

Jessie is survived by two sons, Robert (Sylvia) Hopfer of Neillsville and David (Lorna) Hopfer of Wisconsin Rapids; two daughters, Nancy (Gary) Hayes of Hewitt and Susan Hopfer of Batavia, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Charles Barr and three sisters, Elsie Nyeland, Viola Shaw and Hazel Brauneies.

Memorials may be given as an expression of sympathy to the Palliative Care Unit at Saint Joseph's Hospital.
