Charles O. Schier

Charles O. Schier, 78, of Marshfield died Monday, March 13, 2006, at Saint Joseph's Hospital.

Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 17, 2006, at Hansen Funeral Home. The Rev. Robert Brandt will officiate. Maldon Plank will provide music.

Burial will be in the Lynn Cemetery, with military honors conducted by VFW Post No. 1866. Serving as pallbearers are Ulrich Banck and Jim, Dave, Jerry, Jeff and John Masephol.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 16, 2006, and from 10 a.m. until service time Friday, both at the funeral home.

Mr. Schier was born May 15, 1927, in Granton, the son of the late Oscar and Alice (Williams) Schier. Charley attended Lynn School and graduated from Granton School after returning from the service. Mr. Schier enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in France and Germany during World War II, where he met and married the love of his life, Margot Weigand, on Oct. 24, 1948, in Hanau, Germany.

After returning from Germany, the couple farmed in the Granton area for a couple of years, then moved to Chicago, where he worked in home construction. Later, Charles was employed by the City of Deerfield, Ill., as director of public works. Charley retired in 1987 after 25 years with the city and he and Margot moved back to Wisconsin, making their home in Marshfield.

Charles was an avid outdoorsman and deer hunter, quick with a smile and a humorous story. He was a member of the Deerfield American Legion Post No. 738 and an avid Packers fan. Mr. Schier enjoyed visiting and spending time with family, friends and the staff at Cardiac Rehabilitation and Dialysis Unit. Every Memorial Day, he and Margot would place a wreath at the Highground Veterans Memorial in Neillsville, Wis.

Mr. Schier is survived by his wife, Margot, Marshfield; nephews, Ulrich, Allen and Gary Banck; several cousins, their children and grandchildren, all of whom lovingly remember him as "Uncle Chuck;" and by his chocolate Labrador retriever, Casey.
