Mr. and Mrs. Nedry Sterling of Abbotsford, Wisconsin, have received word from the War Department that their son, Staff Sgt. Melvin L. Sterling, 20, who crashed in a flaming plane over Austria, has been declared officially dead.
The Abbotsford serviceman enlisted in Chicago and reached Italy on his overseas assignment March 31, 1944. He went on his first mission from Italy May 10, 1944.
He was reported missing since July 8, 1944, when his plane was hit by antiaircraft fire that morning while over Vienna.
