Steinwand, Joseph F. (2 Mar. 1869 - 30 Aug. 1946)
Joseph F. Steinwand, age 77 years, a director of the Colby State Bank, died Friday morning at 8:30 o’clock, a heart ailment being the cause of his departure. A rosary was said Monday evening at the Lulloff Funeral Home, where the body had been lying in state, and a Requiem High Mass was read Tuesday morning at 9:00 o’clock at St. Mary’s Catholic church in Colby, Wis., Rev. N. B. Beschta officiating, and internment was made in the Colby (Colby, Clark Co. Wis.) Cemetery. Pall bearers were Carl Borchert, Louis Borchert, Matt Allar, George Allar, Jack Frinak and Albert Engeldinger.
Mr. Steinwand was born at School Hill, Manitowoc county, on March 2, 1869, and came to Colby in 1876. He was married at Neillsville on Nov. 26, 1895, to Miss Louise Zassenhaus. He began making cheese in Colby in 1885 and was the originator of Colby cheese. For a brief time in 1892, he operated the Colby Creamery. He retired in 1925.
In 1920 he was named a director of the Colby State Bank and some time later was elected vice president. In 1944, he was elected president.
Surviving besides his wife are five children - Francis, Joseph, Richard and Arnold Steinwand and Mrs. Walter (Mary) Mueller, all of Colby, Wisconsin. A daughter, Dora, died in 1942 and a son, Irving, died in infancy. Also surviving are nine grand children and a great grand child.
He will long be remembered as a man of generous impulses who never forgot the hospitable ways of the pioneer. He was respected by all who knew him for his honest dealings and sound business judgement and as a man who had borne adversity bravely and enjoyed prosperity quietly.
