Short, Dale W. (July 1, 1922 - December 23, 2007) Flag

Dale W. Short, age 85, of Granton, died on Sunday, December, 2007 at his home in Granton.

Dale Short was born on July 1, 1922, the son of Eugene and Leah Short. He was born in his parents’ farm home on Pleasant Ridge. He attended Kurth Grade School and Neillsville High School. Dale enlisted in the Army Air Corps in October 1942. He trained in San Angelo, TX then went to the South Pacific. Dale served in New Guinea, Iwo Jima, Guadalcanal and on to Japan. He became a Sergeant on August 9, 1943 and returned to Neillsville in January 1946. The same year he was united in marriage to the former Marjorie Dempsey in Barron, Wis.

In 1937, he and his dad decided to go into the business of raising mink. This resulted into 70 years of producing furs for the market. During those years he was a member of various mink ranching associations serving as officers in all of them.

Dale enjoyed flying his airplane to many places in the United States and Canada. He was a 45-year member of the International Flying Farmers serving as President for four years. He was an avid hunter and combined flying and hunting trips to Colorado, Wyoming, British Columbia, the Yukon and other places.

He was also busy in the community. He served nine years on the Clark Electric cooperative board. He was proud of his many years on the First National Bank board and also M&I Bank in Neillsville. He was a long time member of county, state and national Republican parties, the Neillsville American Legion Post 73, Experimental Aircraft Assoc, (E.A.A.), the National Rifle Association (N.R.A.), the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (A.O.P.A.) and Central Wisconsin Campers Group.

He was a kind and loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a loyal and proud citizen of the United States. He will be missed by his family and many friends.

Dale is survived by his wife, Marjorie Short, of Granton; as well as a son, Wayne (Bonne) Short, of Granton; and a daughter, Lorraine Short, of Bayside, TX; a granddaughter, Stephanie (Lawrence III) Swenor, and a great-grand-daughter, Sydney Swenor. He is further survived by former AFS daughter, Yvonne (Hans) Schuler, of Sao Paulo, Brazil; and one brother Floyd (Joan) Short, of Neillsville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Jeanette Gaier; and a brother, Glen Short.

Funeral services for Dale were held Wednesday, December 26, 2007 at the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville. Interment was in Town of Grant Cemetery, with military Rites accorded by the Neillsville Veterans Council.

Memorials may be directed to the Ministry Home Care Hospice or The Highground.

The Gesche Funeral Home of Neillsville assisted Dale’s family with arrangements.
