The ‘green Swede’ of Merrillan is 86 on St. Pat’s

March 17 is a special day for Esther Green of Merrillan; she’ll turn 86 years old. She jokes, "I’m a Swede by name is Green and my birthday is on St. Patrick’s Day."

Mrs. Green resides on the north side of Merrillan. She was formally (formerly) from Neillsville and still has many friends there.

She remains very active; putting in a garden each year and also cares for a variety of plants and flowers in her home. She also makes rag rugs and crochets.

Most everyone in the Merrillan area knows her as "Grandma." She lost her husband when she was only 26 but managed to raise four children alone. She now has 20 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren and eleven great-great-grandchildren. She proudly states, "Look what I started."
