Steinwand, Louise (6 June 1869 - 13 Feb. 1955)
Mrs. Louise Steinwand, a pioneer resident of the Colby community, died Sunday morning at 3:20 A.M. at her home in the town of Colby at the age of 86 years, a series of strokes being the cause of her death. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at St. Mary’s Catholic church, Rev. Vincent Schwartz officiating, and internment was made in the Colby (Colby, Clark Co. Wis.) Cemetery.
Mrs. Steinwand, nee Zassenhaus, was born June 6, 1869, in Eagle Harbor, Mich. On Nov. 26, 1895, she was married at Neillsville to Joseph F. Steinwand, who died on Aug. 28, 1946. After their marriage the couple moved to a farm west of Colby, where they lived since.
Mr. Steinwand operated a Colby cheese factory for many years and was the originator of the Colby cheese.
Mrs. Steinwand is survived by four sons, Arnold Steinwand, town on Colby; Joseph L. and Francis Steinwand, both of Colby, and Richard Steinwand, Dubuque, Iowa; a daughter, Mrs. Walter Mueller, Colby; a brother, Fred B. Zassenhaus, Colby; a sister, Miss Clara Zassenhaus, Owen; nine grand children and eight great grand children.
A daughter, Mrs. Dora Meckel, died in 1942 and a son, Irving, died in infancy.
Mrs. Steinwand was a good Christian, always endeavoring to perform her duties to the best of her ability, and, like all early pioneers, was of a congenial disposition, which made her many friends, most of whom have already passed on.
