Schlinkert, Herbert (11 MAR 1943)
Pvt. Herbert Schlinkert, radio technician, who has been in training at the Greenville Service Training Center, Greenville, S.C., writes of his trip to Georgia.
Dear Folks:
We are now in the state of George, or should I say, Swamp of Georgia. I’ve never seen so much water. It rained practically all the way down here and was plenty cold.
We left Camp at 3:30 a.m. and arrived here at 6:00 p.m. We moved into Barracks that hold about fifty men.
We traveled in convoy with from 75 to 100 trucks, Jeeps and other vehicles. About 9:00 a.m. we stopped for coffee. Had dinner at Louisville, Georgia and supper at Waycross with good hot cocoa, which I really appreciated. For on an average is good down here, with the exception of better and milk, at least what we had last night wasn’t butter unless if came from a coconut cow. There are supposed to be some planes around, also a U.S.O., but I haven’t time to look around as yet. Will write more next time.
Love to all -- Herb
