Pvt. Walter Wolk of West Allis, Wisconsin, age 21, son of former Colby people, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wolk, Sr., the latter being the former Viola Meach, was killed in an auto accident late Monday and his wife of two months was injured critically just 16 hours before he was to return to Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo.
The accident happened at 11:45 p.m. on Highway 45-55, four miles northwest of Germantown in Washington County. Wolk’s car hit the rear dual wheels of an approaching truck, and careened broadside into a culvert. Wolk was thrown from the car, which crumpled on his wife, Bonnie, 17.
She suffered compound fractures of both legs and is at St. Joseph’s Hospital in West Bend in critical condition.
The driver of the truck, William Rohloff of Wausau, age 45, was shaken up but not hurt. The undercarriage of the truck was ripped loose by the impact.
Pvt. Wolk enlisted in the army May 25 and was stationed with the U.S. Air Corps Engineers at Ft. Leonard Wood. He would have concluded his furlough at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Besides his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter L. Wolk, a brother, Donald, survives.
Military funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Koelsch Funeral Home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
