July, John (21 APR 1846 - 22 APR 1912)
"Jack July is dead" was the report that spread over the city (Colby, Clark Co., Wis.), Monday afternoon, as on the wings of the wind and caused much excitement and sorrow to all, for Jack was universally liked by all who knew him. He made friends with everyone he met and had the happy faculty of retaining their friendship. When the Phonograph last came to you Jack, was upon our streets greeting his friends with his usual happy "good morning." Today all that was mortal of our friend and townsman is being laid to peacefully at rest in the Catholic Cemetery.
At 2:35 Monday afternoon, April 22nd, 1912, his body was found lying on the floor in the Commercial Hotel closet and Dr. A.M. Christofferson, who was immediately called, pronounced him dead and gave heart failure as the cause. The body was removed to the home of his sister, Mrs. R. Shortell.
John July was born in the town of Freedom, Outagamie County, Wis., April 21st, 1846, and was the first white child born in that township. He lived there until twenty-four years of age, when he commenced rafting the Wisconsin River. In 1872 he started a liquor store at Fort Howard, Wis., where he was in business for eight years. In April 1880, he came to Colby and engaged in the same business, and has since made this place his home. He never married. He had erected the fine brick block on the corner of Division and Spence Streets, and still owned the same at the time of his death. He recently purchased the Meritt property in the East Ward and held stock in the Colby Cheese Box & Silo Company. He retired from business, on account of poor health, a few years ago and has made the Commercial Hotel his home ever since.
He is survived by two brothers and four sisters, Lucy, Mrs. Richard Shortell of this city; Mrs. Kate Vandenberg of Green bay; Peter July of Green Bay; Paul July of Tacoma, Wash.; Gertrude, Mrs. Will Hoebe of Freedom; Miss Minnie July of Green Bay, and many other relatives and hosts of friends.
The funeral is being held from St. Mary’s Church, this Thursday forenoon, Rev. H.J. Artmann officiating.
