The name in Germany is Kliefoth, but the spelling has been anglicized in several ways - this particular way may allow the reader to pronounce it according to the way it sounds in German: the second vowel would be pronounced, eg., Klee futh, whereas several other languages would pronounce the first vowel which would cause the correct spelling to be pronounced klii futh.
It has also been spelled variously Klieforth and Kleiforth and even Cleeforth, to bring out the German pronunciation.
I have a complete family tree dating back to the 1700s which shows the evolution of the correct name. Numerous persons named Kliefoth still reside in Germany, and one major origin of the family was in Mecklingburg, Schwerien. There was a US ambassador with this surname; and a very famous theologian, Theodore Kliefoth.
My branch of the family migrated to Texas and it would appear that another branch migrated to Wisconsin.
