Reverand Harry M. Hackney (22 Aug 1849 - ?)

REV. HARRY M. HACKNEY, Merrillan, was born, Aug. 22, 1849, in Oakfield, Perry Co., Ohio; moved from there to Wisconsin with his parents in 1851, his father being one of the old pioneer ministers of the State; was a student of the Durand Academy, of the Sparta High School, and also of the Galesville University. He read law with the Hon. G. C. Hazelton, of Boscobel, Wis.; he also attended Madison Law School and practiced law two years at Boscobel. But, feeling it his duty to preach the Gospel, he entered the ministry and was ordained for that work by Bishop Andrews as deacon in 1877, at Eau Claire, Wis., and by Bishop Peck as elder of La Crosse in 1879. His first parish was at Plainfield, Waushara Co., where he remained for three years, and at the end of his appointment there, he removed to Merrillan Junction, where he has since remained. Rev. Hackney was married, April 6, 1871, at Boscobel, (Grant Co., Wisconsin) to Miss Harriet Muffley. She was born at Fairplay, Wis., Jan. 11, 1854, by whom he has had two children, one infant son died June 20, 1873, and one daughter now living, Mabel May.

"A committee, consisting of Past Grand Master French, Brothers Fuller, 110, and Railsback, 110, was admitted with Brother Charles P. Hackney, of Pomegranate Lodge No. 110, the oldest Mason in the state. Brother Hackney was born in 1814, and was made a Mason April 23d, 1846. The Grand Master welcomed Brother Hackney to the Grand Lodge, and he responded, thanking it for helping to care for him and his wife in his declining years. The Grand Master asked Past Grand Master Lininger to respond to the remarks made by Brother Hackney, and Brother Fuller also addressed the Grand Lodge.

On motion of Past Grand Master Lininger the Committee on Relief was instructed to increase the appropriation for relief of Brother Hackney from $10.00 to $25.00 per month.

JORDAN MEDAL.

On October 4th, 1901, during a session of schools held by Brother French, Grand Custodian at Tekamah, at which school Grand Master Robert E. Evans was present, one of the pleasing events of the occasion was the presentation of a Jordan Medal to Brother Isaac Gibson an honored ember of Tekamah Lodge No. 31, and the oldest Mason in Nebraska. On April 22d, 1904, the aged brother passed away, and his son returned the medal to the Grand Lodge with the request that it be presented to the oldest Mason in the jurisdiction. See page 746, proceedings of 1904. On July 15th, 1905, Grand Master Burnham in compliance with the orders of the Grand Lodge, presented the medal to M. W. Brother Robert W. Furnas, Past Grand Master, as the oldest Mason of this Grand Jurisdiction. After the demise of Brother Furnas on June 1st, 1905, this medal was returned to the Grand Lodge the second time, to be transmitted to the oldest living Mason. After a proper investigation it was found that Rev. Charles P. Hackney, an esteemed member of Pomegranate Lodge No. 110, Ashland, was entitled to the honor of wearing this medal. The veteran Mason was born August 11, 1814; was made a Mason April 23d, 1846, and called from labor to refreshment November 26th, 1906. The medal was returned to the Grand Lodge for the third time."

Methodist Episcopal Church. – Early in the year 1855, the few members of this faith then residing in Boscobel or contiguous sections gathered together at the residence of Mr. James M. Dickerson, where they listened to the principles of Christianity as they were inculcated by the Rev. Mr. Buck, the minister who at that time included Boscobel in his circuit. The following year, the little class held their meetings in the depot. Upon the organization of the Congregational congregation in 1857, the two societies used the depot on alternate Sundays. In the meantime, the Rev. Mr. McMullen had succeeded Mr. Buck. During the pastorate of Rev. Mr. Irish, a year later, the Methodist society held services in the old log schoolhouse, standing near the present cemetery. Rev. C. Cook followed Mr. Irish as Pastor of the young church, preaching a few times in the old schoolhouse, when the church building in process of erection was completed, and the society was no longer homeless. This was in 1861. Among the earlier members of the church were Mrs. Susan Dickerson, who was prominently connected with the church from its organization until the time of her death; A. Ransom, Eliza Ransom, George Hall and Mrs. Hall, “Father” Irish and Mrs. Irish.

The house of worship was used for the six years next succeeding, when the necessity of a larger church was forced prominently upon the minds of the members, and steps were accordingly taken to erect a structure in accordance with the needs of the society. A church edifice, 30x60, was erected during 1867, at a cost of about $3,000. Of this amount some $1,000 was raised by subscription, while the old church building was sold to the city for school purposes, the consideration being $800. Other sources furnished additional sums, so that upon the dedication of the structure, the debt had been scaled down to $350. In the meantime, Rev. Mr. Cook had been succeeded by other Pastors – Rev. Z. S. Hurd being the Pastor at the time the new church was completed, and remained in charge one year. The church records are sadly lacking in statistical matter, there being an entire absence of anything in the shape of records for several years, but the following list of Pastors is in the main correct from Mr. Hurd’s pastorate, following whom came Rev. Mr. Buck for eighteen months; Rev. Mr. Cooley, several months; Rev. C. P. Hackney, three years; W. W Wheaton, one year; George W. Nuzam, two years; George Haigh, who remained a few months; John Allison, one year and eight months; and the present Pastor, who has been in charge one year.
