Pawlak, Joyce (OCT 1943 - 15 NOV 1943)

Fire of unknown origin destroyed the farm house of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Pawlak of Withee Township (Clark Co., Wis.) on Monday morning and caused the death of their 1-month old daughter Joyce. Three other children, 1 ½, 2 ½ and 3 ½ years old escaped from the house. The mother, in the barn at the time, was met by a rush of smoke and flames when she attemped to enter the house to save the baby.

The fire started about 9:30 Monday morning and the building was a mass of flames when first noticed by neighbors. The entire contents of the home and coal shed in the rear were destroyed. The farm is located one mile east and ¼ mile south of Thorp.

Mr. Pawlak had left at 8:00 for his work as section hand on the Soo Line railroad and two other children were at school.
