Schwartz, Harriet S. (24 Aug 1911 - 3 Apr 2008)

Harriet S. Schwartz, age 96 of Eau Claire, died peacefully at Syverson Lutheran Home in Eau Claire on Thursday, April 3, 2008.

Harriet was born in Ogilvie, Minn., on August 24, 1911. She graduated from Ogilvie High School in 1932 and St. Cloud State Teachers College July 19, 1935.

Harriet married R. Reeves Schwartz on December 31, 1941. She began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in Kanabec, Minn. She also taught at the State Home for Girls, Sauk Centre, Minn., Litchfield High School in Minnesota, and Jefferson High School in Wisconsin and Colby High School in Wisconsin until her retirement. She tutored reading after her retirement.

Harriet was a member and worked on many campaigns with the Republican Party, and she was a member of AAUW, a member and president of Eau Claire Women’s Club, and a member of the Sons of Norway.

Harriet was preceded in death by her husband, R. Reeves Schwartz; son, Dr. John Schwartz; and grandson, Michael Schwartz.

She is survived by two sons, Dr. Stephen Schwartz (Joann), Albert Lea, Minn., Dr. Richard Schwartz (Ellen), Eau Claire; and one daughter, Mary Butchert (Dr. Tony) of Eau Claire; a daughter-in-law, Ann Schwartz, of Madison. She is also survived by two granddaughters, Patricia Butchert of Las Vegas, Marie Butchert of Minneapolis; six grandsons, Tom Schwartz (Anne) of Juneau, Ala., Greg Schwartz (Kristen) of Jacksonville, Fla., Jeff Schwartz (Oye) Wilmington, N.C., Dr. Bill Schwartz, of Steamboat Springs, Colo., Chris Schwartz, Wilmington, N.C., and Karl (Tammy) Schwartz, Chetek; five great-grandchildren, Annika, Minta, Ella, Similian (Bob) and Andaman (Ray).

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the many people who cared for Harriet and the Syverson Lutheran Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Eau Claire Humane Association, Christ Church Cathedral, Syverson Lutheran Home or an organization of the donor’s choice. Friends may offer condolences online at www.fullerspeckienhulke.com.

Funeral Services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 7, at Christ Church Cathedral, 510 South Farwell Street, Eau Claire. The Very Reverend Robert Rademaker and Father H. Scott Kirby presided. Burial was in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Eau Claire immediately following the services. Visitation was at the church on Monday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Fuller-Speckien-Hulke Funeral Home, 3209 Rudolph Road, Eau Claire, assisted the family with the arrangements.
