Hales, Maggie D. (29 MAY 1857 - 7 NOV 1941)
Mrs. Maggie Diana Hales was born in Alto Township, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, May 29, 1857 to William H. and Arvilla Smithers. She was one of a family of eight, seven girls and a boy, all of whom preceded her in death, except the youngest sister, Mrs. Lois A. Way of Newberg, Oregon, on the 8th day of January 1880. She was united in marriage to Albert W. Hales at Spencer, Ia. Eleven children were born to this union, three having died in infancy. The surviving children are Anna, Mrs. Wm. Campbell, town of Fremont, Philip W. Poynette, Lottie M. Page, Stanley, George and Loren A., York, Guy S., Port Washington, Henry O., Wisconsin Rapids, and Ella, Mrs. Will Eibergen, York. There are 14 grandchildren and nine great grand children.
In 1881 Mr. and Mrs. Hales and a baby daughter, Ann, made their first trip to Clark county, coming from home in Spencer, Iowa, to visit relatives. Mrs. Eibergen had often heard her mother give the details of that trip. The train on which they were coming north was snowbound for an entire week near Owatonna, Minn.
In 1883 Mr. and Mrs. Hales and their two children returned to establish a home in the town of York, then practically a wilderness, possessed of the vigor of youth, limitless ambition and a determination to succeed. They worked early and late, over a long period of time to accomplish the task which they had undertaken, that of clearing the land and erecting buildings. With the exception of none years, which she spent in the village of Granton, Mrs. Hales lived on the farm continuously since 1883. She made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Eibergen for the past thirteen years, where she passed away suddenly and peacefully on Friday, Nov. 7th at one P. M.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 from the home of her daughter and at 2:00 from the York Center church, Rev. Orlando Jewell officiating. Burial was made in the Neillsville cemetery.
