Joseph Henry Horban, age 53, of 126 E. 4th avenue, Stanley, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 25, 2008, at the Robert J. Dole Veterans Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas.
Joe was born on January 21, 1955, in Chicago, IL, the son of Joseph and Emily (Manier) Horban. He moved with his family in 1959 to rural Stanley, WI, where he attended area schools and was a member of the graduating class of 1973.
Following high school, Joe enlisted in the United States Navy. Petty Officer ETN3 (SS) Joseph H. Horban served onboard the USS Casimir Pulaski (SSBN-633 Gold), a ballistic missile nuclear submarine, based in Groton, Connecticut. Joe served in the Navigation Electronics Division Repair Parts, having received his training as an Electronics Technician (N) Third Class (SS) and his Submarine Qualification Certificate, in 1976.
Joe was a member of the American Legion.
Following active duty, Joe was certified, in 1982, with Automation Industries, Inc., Trident Strategic Weapons Systems, and was employed for over five years by Vitro Labs Division, a Naval Corporation in Silver Spring, Maryland, having completed their training program in 1985.
After his naval career, Joe managed Replay Arcade and House of Hats in Bel Air, Maryland, later moving to Arizona for a time before moving back to Stanley, where he most recently ran a home business, Joe’s Handyman and Clock Repair Service. Joe was able to fix just about anything!
Joe’s hobbies included gourmet cooking, and he was a very skillful guitarist.
Joe is survived by his mother, Emily Horban of Stanley; brothers: Ron (Jolene) Horban of Indianapolis, IN, and Dave Horban of Roberts, WI; sisters: Carol (Steve) Mohr of Stanley, and Cathy (Randy) Winger of Augusta, WI; many nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles, who will all miss him greatly.
Joe was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Horban, in 2000.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 24, 2008, at the South Worden Cemetery, with Steve Mohr officiating.
