Wiertz, Elizabeth (11 June 1863 - 5 April 1944)

Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth, 80, of Neillsville were held Monday morning, April 10, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Rev. J. A. Biegler, pastor of the church, conducted the Solemn Requiem High Mass, assisted by Rev. John Novak of Greenwood and Rev. Raphael Stragisher of Willard. Burial took place in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Mrs. Wiertz passed away April 5, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lawrence Piper in Minneapolis, where she spent the last few months of her life. She became ill last summer, and in the fall went to Minneapolis to be cared for by her children.

Elizabeth Bonn, daughter of Anthony and Anna Bonn, was born June 11, 1863, near Cologne, Germany, and spent her early life there. When she was 18 years of age, she came with her family to America. They came to Clark County in 1898, settling on a farm in the town of Washburn. They later lived in the town of Lyn for a time, and moved to Neillsville in 1914, where she has since resided. She had lived in the present home on East Ninth Street for 25 years.

In 1884, she was married at Peru, Ill., to Joseph Wiertz, who preceded her in death in 1929. Six children were born to them. One son, Frank, a Marine in World War I, lost his life in the battle of Chateau Thierry in 1918.

Five children survive their mother. They are: William, Chicago, Ill.; Anthony, Dayton, Ohio; Joseph, Carl and Helen, and Mrs. Lawrence Piper, Minneapolis, Minn. There are three granddaughters, Marguerite, Mrs. James Thomason, Chicago, Miss Genevieve Wiertz, New York City, and Miss Patricia Piper, Minneapolis. The two granddaughters from the East visited their grandmother in February, but were unable to be here for the funeral services. All of the children were here for the funeral, except Anthony, who is ill.

Other relatives who were here for the services were Mrs. William Wiertz, Chicago; Mrs. Carl Wiertz, Mrs. Joseph Wiertz, Lawrence Piper and Miss Patricia Piper, Minneapolis and Seaman 1/c James Thomason of Chicago, husband of the granddaughter, Marguerite.

Mrs. Wiertz was a good neighbor and friend, and a faithful member and attendant of St. Mary’s Church. She was a member of the Christian Mothers’ society. A rosary service was held Sunday afternoon at the home.

Pall bearers were Joe Zilk, George Tibbett, John Hauser, Nick Ganger, Henry Wasserberger and Adolph Schaub.

Funeral arrangements were in charge of the Lowe Funeral Home.
