Vanderhyden, Gilbert (2 AUG 11861 - 9 SEP 1945)

Last rites were conducted by Father A.M. Muckerheide at St. Bernard’s Church here at 9:30 last Wednesday morning for Gilbert Vanderhyden, Town of Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.) resident who passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chippewa Falls, Sept. 9, 1945, of fractured hip and heart trouble. Mr. Vanderhyden had reached the age of 84 years, 1 month and 7 days.

He was born in Appleton, Wis., on Aug. 2, 1861. At the age of sixteen years Mr. Vanderhyden moved to West Holland, where he was united in marriage to Johanna Van Abel, on May 5th, 1885. Mrs. Vanderhyden passed away on July 21, 1911. In 1899 he came to Thorp village where he resided until 1912, when he and his family moved to a farm in the Town of Thorp.

Mr. Vanderhyden was engaged in teaming, building, moving, and Clark County road building while in the village and was active up until a week before his death when he fell and broke his hip.

He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters for the past forty-three years and members of that order attended the funeral services in a body.

He is survived by two daughters, Barbara Vanderhyden and Mamie, Mrs. Jay Alger of Thorp, (one daughter, Kosie, died June 14, 1902); two sons, Harry and Wilfred of Thorp, one sister, Mrs. Mamie Broeren of Menasha, Wis., and one brother, John of Minneapolis.

He was laid to rest in St. Bernard’s Cemetery with the following acting as pallbearers: George Haas, Richard Brunner, Alfred Kass, Jos. Gengler, Anton Baldeschwiler and George Maier.

Among those attending the funeral were: Mrs. Mamie Broeren, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Broeren and Mrs. Paul Bach of Menasha; John Van Abel, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Van Abel, John and William Broeren of West Holland; Harold Chopin, Mrs. Al Schmitz and Dorothy Vanderhyden of Milwaukee; Mrs. Geo. Rafferty of Eau Claire; Anton Van Loo and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Warns Jr. of Clark; Bernard Schmidt of Hudson; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Velcheck of Stevens Point; Mr. and Mrs. Theo. Heiting, Mrs. Joe Haas, Mr. John Huls, Barney Micke and Mrs. Wilfred Pinter of Stanley.
