Gates, Edwin H. (24 July 1903 - 15 Nov. 1944)
Edwin H. Gates, Jr., son of Edwin Gates of Neillsville, died on November 15, 1944, at Providence, R. I. He was born July 24, 1903, in Neillsville, on the Gates farm at the south end of Grand Avenue, where the family then resided, the farm now owned and occupied by Mr. and Mrs. John Stanton.
In 1921 he enlisted in the U. S. Marines, serving seven years, 35 months of which he was in the San Domingo, and later in the Coast Guard. After the expiration of his army service, he worked for a time as a salesman in Boston, was superintendent of a large farm in Connecticut, and for a time was a policeman in his home city. After the Pearl Harbor disaster, he volunteered for work there in rebuilding the harbor, but became ill and was forced to return home. As his health improved again, he took up a trade which he had followed some in early life, that of pipe fitter. He had been in failing health the past eight years.
Mr. Gates is survived by his parents, his wife, Lillian, and two daughters, Betty aged 15, and Barbara 13. Also surviving are the following brothers and sisters: the oldest brother, Dan, who lived at Seely Lake, Mont.; a brother, J. L. Gates, Tacoma, Wash.; two sisters, Nellie, Mrs. Alfred Sethen, and Genevieve, Mrs. Milo Ristan, Eastend, Sask., Canada; also several nieces and nephews. One sister, Blanche died several years ago.
