Dolores "Dode" Cowles Worth Behling, 82, Park Ridge, died on Friday June 6, 2008, at St. Michael’s Hospital, Stevens Point, after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 11, at Boston Funeral Home, Stevens Point. The Rev. Steve Olson officiated. Burial followed at Forest Cemetery.
Dolores was born in Stratford, on May 8, 1926, to Lawrence and Loretta (nee Bannach) Cowles. She grew up in Loyal, where she graduated from high school in 1943. She graduated from Stevens Point Teachers College in 1947, where she majored in social studies and English and minored in music. She taught at Rosholt, Plainfield and Waupaca high schools. She also taught in a school in Iowa, as well as did office work in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She married Joseph Worth in 1948. He died in 1973. She married Leroy "Red" Behling in 1977.He died in 1977. Her hobbies included singing, playing the piano, reading and attending theater shows. She joined the Center Point Chapter of Sweet Adelines in 1977, and organized a quartet that she performed in for 31 years known as "Sheer Happiness." Other members of that group included Mary Peplinski, Laurel Hoeth and Lorraine Van Asten. She was president and secretary of the Sweet Adeline organization for several years and held a regional office. She received their highest honor locally for several years being named "Sweet Adeline Leading Lady of the Year" or the SALLY award. This was awarded due to her work in local and regional Sweet Adeline activities. She was instrumental in selecting music for Sweet Adeline competitions and shows. Despite her illness, she participated in her last show with the Sweet Adelines in November 2007. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Survivors include two sons, Karl Worth, Stevens Point, and Joseph Worth, Stevens Point; a sister, Mary (Fred) Cowles Hood, Lanchester, Ky.; a niece, Sarah Hood, Lexington, Ky.; a brother-in-law, Bob (Marilyn) Worth, Stevens Point; step children, Lois (Behling) Bertolino, Washington, and Larry Behling, Oregon; an aunt, Lillian Shefchik, Rhinelander; her poodle, Clancy; and many cousins.
