Roy Olson of Loyal retired in January after working for Northern States Power Company for 31 years.

He and his wife Margie are looking forward to be able to go camping more often and traveling with their camper, they said.

“There is a lot of work to catch up on around home first though,” Roy says. “A lot of work was left until I retired, when I’d have more time.” He built the house they are living in during 1962 and ’63.

Roy began his career with Northern States in 1947 at Neillsville as a lineman.

In 1960 he came to Loyal as District Representative, replacing Perry (Fuzzy) Volk, who retired. “It was still the same work,” Roy Says, “building and repairing lines every day and reading meters. Most of the downed line occurred during bad weather, from storms with lightning or wind. And if there was trouble, you had to go.”

Roy and Margie have four children, all but David are married. Herb has a Dental Lab in Duluth and Superior. He lives in Duluth. Roy, Jr. at Neenah, is an electrical worker; superintendent at the Neenah Foundry. Their daughter, Sandy, lives at La Crosse, and David, who recently got out of the service, also lives at La Crosse and works for the Alma Dairyland Power Company.

They have five grandchildren.

It isn’t always the big stores that win the prizes. Last week the Loyal IGA Store was presented with an award won in a recent “Beef Round Up” promotion sponsored by the Copps Distributing Company of Stevens Point.

In making the presentation, Jerry Cronce, IGA Meat Specialist said, “Copps recognized Loyal IGA’s outstanding ability for displaying and merchandising IGA Table Rite beef, which results in an accompanying increase in sales.”

Over 60 area stores participated in the month long promotion.

Receiving the award were Jack Fulwiler, head of the meat department for the past 188 years, and Dawn Dering, store owner.
