Best, Mary (? - 22 AUG 1903)
Mrs. Mary Best of Kiel, Wisconsin, and here (Neillsville, Clark Co., Wis.) on a visit to her granddaughter, Mrs. H. H. Eberhart, mistook the elevator door on the first floor of the Eberhart Furniture Store for the shop door, opened it, and walked in, falling to the basement floor, seven and a half feet, breaking her collar bone and a leg and receiving internal injuries from which she died shortly afterwards. The accident happened at 9 o’clock Saturday evening. The store was not lighted, and the elevator had been run to the second story. Mrs. Best was 83 years old, and not familiar with the premises. She had ridden from Thorp the Tuesday before, and was well preserved and sprightly. She had been reading on the back stoop at the shop, then went out in front, and was returning to the rear of the shop when the accident occurred.
The body was shipped to Kiel on the midnight train Saturday night, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Eberhart and other relatives. The funeral was held at Kiel yesterday afternoon.
